Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday sought to allay public concerns over the ongoing investigation into the death of legendary singer Zubeen Garg, appealing for patience and reiterating that justice will be ensured.
Speaking to reporters, Sarma said, “I would also like to say: give the SIT some time. If the SIT can’t do anything and the people of Assam are not satisfied, we will seek to transfer the case to the CBI.”

The Chief Minister also addressed speculation regarding access to the late singer’s personal and digital accounts. He clarified that Zubeen’s wife, Garima Garg, has made no such request to the government for control of his social media or other personal assets.
“If these are with Siddharth Sharma, and we were to hand them over to his wife, Garima Garg has not made any such request. If the family required anything in this regard, Garima Garg would certainly communicate it, as the Commissioner of Police is in daily contact with her. At present, the family’s only request is for justice,” Sarma added.
The sudden demise of Zubeen Garg in Singapore on September 19 has left Assam and the Northeast in shock. Popularly known as Zubeen Da, the singer, composer, and actor was not only one of Assam’s most celebrated artists but also a cultural icon whose songs transcended generations. His funeral in Guwahati earlier this week drew lakhs of mourners, with fans chanting his songs as his sister lit the funeral pyre.
Public grief has been matched by a chorus of demands for a transparent and conclusive probe into the circumstances of his death. Several political leaders, including Leader of Opposition Debabrata Saikia, have already sought a CBI investigation, citing “suspicious circumstances.”
As emotions continue to run high, the state government’s handling of the case is under close public scrutiny.
